A novel two-surgeon technique of simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery with complete delinking.

Though technological advancements have transcended beyond expectation, phacoemulsification remains a challenge in uncooperative patients, where the procedure may be contemplated under general anesthesia, with simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery (SBCS) being the surgery of choice. In this manuscript, we have reported a novel two-surgeon technique of SBCS on a 50-year-old mentally subnormal patient. Under general anesthesia, two surgeons performed phacoemulsification simultaneously, using two separate microscopes, irrigation lines, phaco machines, instruments, and assistants. Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was performed in both eyes (OU). The patient had a visual recovery from 5/60, N36 in OU preoperatively to 6/12, N10 in OU on post-operative day 3 and 1 month, with no complications. This technique can potentially reduce the risk of endophthalmitis, repeated and prolonged anesthesia, and the number of hospital visits. To the best of our knowledge, this two-surgeon technique of SBCS has never been reported in the literature.

Perception, burden and satisfaction of parents of children attending online classes during COVID-19 lockdown: A cross-sectional survey.

Introduction: Coronavirus has spread havoc globally, resulting in the closure of all sectors including education. Therefore, to continue a child's learning, the government started online classes from home by involving parents. This new learning method might be hectic and challenging for parents; therefore, this study aimed to assess the perception, burden, and satisfaction of parents of children attending online classes. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in three schools of Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. A total of 220 parents of children attending online classes and studying between first and fifth standard responded voluntarily. Google Form was used to assess perception, burden, and satisfaction regarding online classes and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The mean age of parents was 34.1 ± 5 years, and most of the respondents were mothers. Out of 220 parents, 52% showed negative perception, 42% experienced moderate to severe burden, and 51% were highly satisfied with the online classes during COVID-19 lockdown. Pearson's correlation coefficient showed a positive correlation between perception andsatisfaction of parents (P = 0.000, r = 0.616 *). Parental role and preferred teaching method had a significant association with parental perception (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). The app used and preferred teaching method during the pandemic had a significant association with parental satisfaction regarding online classes (p < 0.01, P < 0.05). Conclusion: Parents had negative perception and experienced moderate to severe burden concerning online classes. At the same time, they were highly satisfied with achieving educational objectives to some extent during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Custard apple seed induced keratitis: a harmful traditional practice in South India.

Custard apple seeds have been used as a traditional remedy for scalp infestation of lice and dandruff since many years in our part of the world. Not many people, doctors even, are aware about the ill effects of this practice. Surprisingly, there are very few reports on poisoning due to these seeds and the management is not very well streamlined. Rohit Shetty et al. highlighted the ill effects of the seeds and the need to avoid steroids in these cases as they worsen the clinical scenario. We present 2 patients who developed keratoconjunctivitis due to ocular exposure with custard apple seeds. However, we managed our cases slightly differently. We scraped off the loose epithelium and patched the eye for a day or two with topical antibiotics and lubricants. The patients responded very well. We highlight our series to describe an alternate way of treatment for cases with custard apple seed injury.
